What is Vascular Testing?

Vascular testing is the term for a group of non-invasive diagnostic procedures used to evaluate blood flow through the veins and arteries. These tests help detect circulatory issues such as blockages, narrowing or abnormalities that can lead to serious conditions like peripheral artery disease, deep vein thrombosis or carotid artery disease.

There are several types of vascular tests.

• Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to create real-time images of blood flow in the arteries and veins. It helps identify blockages, blood clots or abnormal circulation.
• Ankle-Brachial Index Test measures blood pressure in the ankles and arms to assess circulation in the limbs related to peripheral artery disease.
• Carotid ultrasounds specifically evaluate the carotid arteries in the neck for narrowing or plaque buildup, which can increase the risk of stroke.
• Venous doppler ultrasounds detect blood clots or vein abnormalities and are often used to diagnose deep vein thrombosis.
• Arterial doppler testing assesses blood flow in the appendages to identify arterial blockages.

Vascular testing can detect early signs of serious, and even deadly, conditions. Decreased blood flow, clotting or changes to the structure of the arteries and blood vessels can cause embolisms or strokes. You should consider vascular testing if you have leg pain or cramping when walking, swelling or discoloration of the legs or a family history of vascular disease or stroke. Diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol all increase your risk of vascular disease, so these risk factors should be assessed.
