What is a Skin Lesion and When Should I Consider Removing It?

Skin lesions are common and can range from harmless growths to signs of more serious conditions. While many lesions are benign and don’t require treatment, when should you consider removing one?

What is a Skin Lesion?

Skin lesions are abnormal growths or patches on the skin that differ in color, texture or appearance from the surrounding skin. They can be present from birth or develop over time due to sun exposure, aging or infection. Common types of skin lesions include moles, warts, skin tags, cysts and seborrheic keratoses.

Reasons to Consider Removing Skin Lesions

Lesions that change in size, shape, color or texture are red flags that they may become cancerous. If a skin lesion is bleeding, itching or doesn’t seem to heal, it should be evaluated by your doctor. Early detection and removal are crucial for conditions like melanoma or basal cell carcinoma.

Lesions that are irritated by clothing, jewelry, daily activities or those that cause pain or bleeding may need to be removed to alleviate discomfort.

Even benign lesions can be removed if they cause self-consciousness or you just don’t like them. Procedures to remove them are often quick and can significantly improve appearance.

Lesions that are prone to infection, especially if they’re in areas that are frequently moist or rubbed, might be candidates for removal to prevent recurrent issues.

Treatment Options

Some skin lesions will have to be cut or scraped off, but cryotherapy is the least invasive treatment option. Cryotherapy uses extremely cold liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy unwanted tissue. This method is effective for treating warts, superficial cancerous cells and other skin lesions. The area may appear red, swollen or blistered immediately following treatment, but healing typically occurs within 7-10 days. Most cryotherapy treatments do not leave scars.
