Ultrasounds Aren’t Just For Pregnancy

Ultrasounds are a non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create real-time images of internal structures, making it a valuable tool in family medicine. While often associated with pregnancy care, ultrasound has a wide range of diagnostic uses.

Musculoskeletal Injuries

Ultrasound is useful in evaluating musculoskeletal injuries like tendonitis, sprains, strains and joint abnormalities. An ultrasound can quickly visualize soft tissue structures like muscles, tendons and ligaments to identify tears or inflammation. The results can mean more targeted treatments and less expensive or invasive imaging like an MRI or CT scan.

Ultrasounds can also be used to guide procedures like joint injections or aspirations. Doctors can use ultrasound to ensure precise placement of medication or to remove fluid from areas like the knee, shoulder or wrist. The ability to see the area in real time reduces the risk of complications while increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of the procedure.

Abdominal Examination

Abdominal examinations by ultrasound can give a clear picture of the liver, kidneys, gallbladder and spleen to diagnose gallstones, liver disease or kidney stones. Ultrasounds can be performed in-office to help determine if a referral or specialist is needed.

Lumps or Masses

For patients with lumps or masses, ultrasound can be used to evaluate thyroid nodules, lymph nodes and other soft tissues. It can help a doctor determine if a mass is solid or cystic, and whether further testing or biopsy is necessary. Early detection through ultrasound can even aid in the diagnosis of cancer.

Genecology

While ultrasound may traditionally be associated with obstetrics, it’s also helpful for gynecological issues. Uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts and other reproductive health concerns can all be examined with ultrasound.

Cardiology

Ultrasound can also be used for basic cardiac evaluations to check the heart’s function, detect pericardial effusions, and assess fluid status in patients with heart failure. This technology helps family physicians manage cardiac conditions more effectively.
