Staying Healthy During Holiday Travel & Gatherings

The holidays are a time for celebration, connection and travel. But between crowded airports, busy schedules and colder weather, it’s also prime season for catching viruses and feeling sick. Whether you’re visiting family or hosting guests, a little preparation can go a long way in keeping you healthy throughout the festivities.

Prioritize Sleep and Hydration

Traveling and celebrating can throw off your routine, but rest is essential for a strong immune system. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep each night and drink plenty of water, especially when flying or consuming alcohol. Dehydration can weaken your body’s defenses and make it easier to get sick.

Pack a Health Kit

Be ready for unexpected sniffles or stomach issues. Include essentials like hand sanitizer, tissues, pain relievers, allergy medication, motion sickness tablets and any prescription drugs you take. Don’t forget your insurance card and a copy of your medication list, especially if traveling out of state.

Practice Good Hygiene

Respiratory infections like colds, flu, RSV and COVID-19 spread easily in close quarters. Wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizer in public areas and avoid touching your face. If you’re sick, or someone around you is, wearing a mask in crowded spaces is still a smart way to prevent spreading illness.

Eat Smart

Holiday treats are part of the fun, but balance is key. Try to include fruits, vegetables and lean proteins with each meal to keep your energy steady and digestion on track. Overeating heavy or sugary foods can lead to fatigue, heartburn and blood sugar spikes.

Mind Your Stress Levels

Travel delays, family dynamics and packed schedules all add up. Prioritize moments of calm by taking a walk, doing some deep breathing or carving out alone time to recharge. Managing stress helps your immune system function better and keeps your mood steady through the busy season.

Stay Up to Date on Vaccines

Before you travel or gather indoors, make sure your flu shot and COVID-19 boosters are current. These vaccines reduce your risk of severe illness and help protect vulnerable family members like young children and older adults.
