Mineral Sunscreen VS Chemical Sunscreen

Sun exposure usually increases with the temperature, so it’s wise to remember that sunscreen is one of the easiest ways to protect your skin’s health. With 2 types of sunscreen available, here’s what sets them apart and how to choose the one that’s right for you.

Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreen, also called physical sunscreen, uses active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients sit on top of the skin and act as a physical barrier, reflecting ultraviolet (UV) rays away from the skin’s surface.

Because they work immediately upon application and are less likely to be absorbed into the skin, mineral sunscreens are recommended for those with sensitive skin and children.

Mineral sunscreens are generally considered very stable and broad-spectrum, meaning they protect against both UVA and UVB rays effectively. The downside for some patients is texture; they can feel thicker and may leave a white cast, especially on darker skin tones.

Chemical Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens use natural compounds such as avobenzone, octinoxate or oxybenzone. These ingredients absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin. These formulations tend to be lightweight, easy to apply and blend easily into skin or under makeup without leaving white residue.

However, chemical sunscreens usually require 15-20 minutes after application before becoming effective, so some planning ahead is necessary. Some patients may also experience skin sensitivity or irritation depending on the specific ingredients used.

Which One Is Better?

There is no universal best sunscreen; both mineral and chemical formulations can provide excellent protection when used correctly and reapplied often. The most important factor is which one you will use consistently and adequately. No matter which type you prefer, always choose a broad-spectrum formula with at least 30 SPF.
