Arthritis in Summer: Causes, Triggers & Management
Many people are surprised (and disappointed) to notice their joint pain doesn’t disappear when the weather warms up. In fact, some with arthritis report that their symptoms actually worsen during the summer months. While arthritis is often associated with cold and damp weather, the heat, humidity and lifestyle changes in summer can increase symptom flare-ups. Understanding why arthritis can feel worse in warmer months, and how to manage it, can help patients stay active and comfortable year round.
Arthritis is an umbrella term for conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory joint disorders. While symptoms vary, many patients experience joint stiffness, swelling and pain that can fluctuate with environmental and behavioral changes. In summer, several factors may contribute to increased discomfort.
Heat and Humidity
High temperatures and humidity can affect how the body regulates fluid balance. Some people report increased joint swelling or a sensation of heaviness in their limbs. Humidity may also exacerbate inflammation in already sensitive joints. Pressure changes before summer storms can also cause expansion in the joints, putting extra pressure on nerves.
Lightweight, breathable clothing can help reduce discomfort in hot weather. Supportive footwear is also important for patients with lower extremity joint involvement. Avoid the heat of the day when possible.
Dehydration
Warm weather increases the risk of dehydration, especially during outdoor activity. Dehydration can reduce joint lubrication, making movement feel more uncomfortable or stiff.
Adequate hydration helps maintain joint lubrication and supports overall health. Aim to drink water consistently throughout the day, especially when outdoors.
Increased Activity
Summer brings an increase in movement, whether it’s gardening, travel, walking, sports or outdoor work. While physical activity is generally beneficial for joint health, sudden increases in activity or overuse can trigger pain or inflammation.
Regular movement is beneficial, but it’s important to avoid overexertion. Low-impact activities such as walking, swimming or cycling are often better tolerated and help maintain joint flexibility without excessive strain.
Air Conditioning & Temperature Swings
Frequent transitions between hot outdoor environments and cold indoor air conditioning can lead to perceived stiffness or discomfort in some individuals. Rapid temperature changes may also heighten pain sensitivity.
Some patients find relief with warm showers or heating pads to reduce stiffness, while others benefit from cold packs to reduce swelling after activity.
