Annual Comprehensive Physical Exams
Whether you feel perfectly healthy or haven’t seen a doctor in a while, an annual exam is one of the smartest things you can do for your long-term health. Rather than waiting for a problem to pop up, these exams keep you on the offense, catching potential issues early and establishing a baseline for your overall health.
What Happens During an Annual Exam
When you visit your primary care provider for a physical, the comprehensive appointment includes:
- Vital sign measurements, like blood pressure, heart rate, temperature and height and weight for BMI
- A full physical examination of your heart, lungs, abdomen, skin and reflexes
- A review of your medical history, a family health history, the medications you take, your lifestyle choices and any ongoing health concerns
- Age-appropriate screenings or lab tests, such as cholesterol, blood sugar and diabetes checks, EKGs or lung function tests if needed, and cancer screenings or imaging depending on age and gender
- Vaccinations or preventive care choices to keep you protected from seasonal and age-related health risks
- A chance to talk with your doctor about your diet, exercise, stress, sleep and preventive steps to support your long-term health
Who Should Get Annual Exams?
Everyone! Depending on your age, health status and risk factors, many providers recommend at least every other year for young adults with no significant health issues. For those 40 and older (or younger adults with chronic conditions or risk factors), yearly exams are advised to maintain more consistent monitoring and keep up to date on age-appropriate screenings.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Physical
To make your annual exam as useful as possible, bring an updated list of medications and supplements you take, allergies you have, and symptoms or questions you have. Be honest about your lifestyle including diet, alcohol & tobacco use, exercise, sleep, stress and mental health. Ask questions of your provider and follow up on any recommendations they give you for lab work, screenings, vaccinations, lifestyle improvements or specialist referrals.
