American Heart Month
February Is American Heart Month, but protecting your heart should really happen all year long. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, but the good news is that many heart conditions are preventable with early awareness and healthy habits.
Why Heart Health Deserves Your Attention
Heart disease can develop silently. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and excess weight may not cause noticeable symptoms at first, but they place significant strain on your heart and blood vessels over time. Regular screenings can detect these issues early, when they’re easiest to treat and manage. During American Heart Month, ask yourself:
- When was my last blood pressure check?
- Do I know my cholesterol numbers?
- How active have I been lately?
- Could my diet use a heart healthy refresh?
Small Changes Make a Big Difference
Heart health doesn’t require dramatic, life altering changes. Simple, consistent habits can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke:
- Get moving for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. Walking, dancing, swimming or biking all count, so find something you enjoy!
- Eat with your heart in mind. Focus on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats. Limit sodium, added sugars and highly processed foods.
- Know your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI numbers. These are all important indicators of heart health, and they’re easy to check at your annual physical.
- Quit smoking. If you smoke or vape, stopping is one of the most powerful things you can do for your heart.
- Manage stress. Chronic stress can raise blood pressure and contribute to unhealthy coping behaviors. Deep breathing, mindfulness and regular exercise can help.
