Cervical Health Awareness Month
January is Cervical Health Awareness Month highlighting one of the most preventable women’s health concerns. It’s easy to put off Pap tests or assume that cervical issues only affect certain age groups, but staying proactive with cervical health is one of the most simple and effective steps you can take for long term wellness.
Why Cervical Health Matters
Cervical cancer once was one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women in the U.S. Today, thanks to routine screening and vaccination, it is largely preventable. Most cervical cancers develop slowly over many years, beginning with small, detectable changes in cervical cells. That means early detection truly can save lives.
The Role of Pap Tests and HPV Screening
A Pap smear looks for abnormal cell changes on the cervix, while HPV testing checks for high risk strains of human papillomavirus that cause the majority of cervical cancers. Together, these screenings offer powerful detection and prevention.
Depending on your age and health history, your healthcare provider will recommend the appropriate screening schedule. Even if you feel healthy or have no symptoms, regular cervical screening is essential because precancerous changes rarely cause discomfort or noticeable symptoms.
HPV Vaccination: Prevention at Its Best
The HPV vaccine is one of the safest and most effective tools we have to prevent cervical cancer. It protects against the most common high risk HPV strains and is recommended for preteens, teens and many adults up to age 45. If you haven’t been vaccinated, talk to your provider about whether it may still benefit you.
Know the Warning Signs
While early cervical changes usually have no symptoms, advanced cervical issues may show up as unusual vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse or abnormal discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment right away.
Preventive care is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. If you’re due for a screening (or not sure when your last one was), schedule an appointment and make January the month of cervical health.
