National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, bringing healthcare providers, families and their communities together to address one of the most pressing pediatric health issues in the United States. According to the CDC, approximately 1 in 5 children are obese, putting them at an increased risk for chronic health conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and joint problems.

Obesity in childhood often follows adolescents into adulthood, so early intervention is important. Beyond physical health, excess weight can impact a child’s social life, emotional well-being and even academic performance. Physicians can help identify risk factors early on and guide families towards sustainable lifestyle changes.

There are many contributors to childhood obesity:

  • Poor nutrition such as a high consumption level of processed foods, drinking sugary drinks and oversized portions can all lead to weight problems.
  • A sedentary lifestyle doesn’t give children the exercise they need.
  • Increased screen time also limits the time and opportunity for active play.
  • Environmental factors like limited access to fresh produce, safe outdoor spaces to move around in or affordable sports programs can make a healthy, active lifestyle out of reach.
  • Family habits that model unhealthy eating or fitness behaviors become normal for children.

To address childhood obesity, a doctor may recommend:

  • Balanced nutrition that focuses on whole foods, an abundance of fresh fruits & vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Families should also work to reduce added sugars and ultra-processed snack foods.
  • Physical activity for at least 60 minutes a day.
  • Limiting screen time so less time is spent sitting still in front of a screen.
  • Involving the whole family so everyone can work to make healthy changes together.
  • Addressing emotional health to encourage a positive body image and high self-esteem.

Routine well-child visits provide opportunities for screening BMI, discussing lifestyle habits and connecting families with resources such as nutrition counseling, local recreation programs and community support groups.
