August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Every August we observe National Immunization Awareness Month to highlight the importance of vaccines in protecting people of all ages from serious, sometimes deadly, disease. From childhood and on through adulthood, immunizations are one of the most effective tools to safeguard public health and prevent the spread of illness.

How Do Vaccines Work?

Vaccines work by teaching your immune system to recognize and fight off harmful viruses and bacteria. Thanks to routine immunizations, many once-common illnesses like polio, measles and whooping cough have been nearly eliminated. But when vaccination rates drop, these diseases can return, often with severe consequences. Vaccination doesn’t just protect individuals; it also contributes to herd immunity, reducing the risk for those who can’t be vaccinated due to medical reasons.

Immunization is for All Ages

Immunization isn’t just for children. National Immunization Awareness Month is a great reminder that people of all ages need vaccines to stay healthy. Infants and children need vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella, polio and more. Teens should receive booster shots for these diseases, as well as vaccines like HPV and meningococcal. Adults need updates on tetanus every decade or so, as well as a shingles vaccine. Pregnant women should receive the Tdap vaccine to protect both themselves and their baby. Everyone should receive their annual flu and Covid shots as well.

One of the best ways to protect your family is to stay up to date with recommended immunizations. Your healthcare provider can help you track which vaccines you or your children may need, especially before back-to-school, travel or during flu season. How easy is that?

Vaccines are a safe, proven way to protect your health and the health of those around you. This National Immunization Awareness Month, take a moment to check your immunization records, schedule any necessary appointments and encourage your loved ones to do the same. A few simple shots today can prevent major health problems tomorrow.
