Tips to Prevent Injury During Summer Travel
Summer is the season of adventure, whether it’s road-tripping across the state, hopping on a plane across an ocean or just driving to the mountains for a weekend hike. While fun is top of mind, it’s important to take precautions to avoid common injuries that can quickly derail your vacation. Here are some tips for preventing injury while traveling this summer.
Stay Hydrated and Safe in the Sun
Heat exhaustion and dehydration are 2 of the most common summer travel hazards. Always carry water, especially when flying, driving long distances or spending time outdoors. Apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear a wide-brimmed hat and take breaks in the shade to avoid sunburns and heatstroke.
Pack a Travel First-Aid Kit
Be prepared for minor injuries by bringing a small kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, allergy medications and motion sickness remedies. If you or a family member has a medical condition, make sure to bring their medication and a copy of any prescriptions in case refills are necessary.
Practice Safe Driving
Road trips are a summer staple, but they come with risks. Always wear seat belts, take breaks every few hours to avoid fatigue and never drive distracted, tired or under the influence. If you’re renting a car abroad, familiarize yourself with local traffic laws and roads.
Stretch and Move on Long Trips
Long periods of sitting on planes or in cars can increase the risk of blood clots or back pain. Make it a point to stretch your legs, rotate your ankles and take short walks during travel. Compression socks on long flights can help with circulation.
Take Safety Precautions with Outdoor Activities
Hiking, biking, swimming and exploring are all great summer pastimes, but they can lead to sprains, falls or more serious injuries if you’re not careful. Wear appropriate footwear, know your limits and don’t skip safety gear like helmets or life jackets. Pay attention to weather conditions and trail warnings to stay ahead of any surprises.
