Is now a good time for a flu vaccine?
Flu season is just around the corner, but the timing of your flu shot can make all the difference in how well you’re protected. Yes, getting vaccinated at any time during flu season is better than not getting vaccinated at all, but there is an optimal window that maximizes your immunity at flu season’s peak. Is now a good time for a flu vaccine?
Flu Season in the United States
In the United States, flu season typically runs from October through May, with the highest activity between December and February. Since it takes about 2 weeks for your body to build full immunity after vaccination, you’ll want your shot to be timed so that your protection is strongest during the peak months.
Flu Vaccine Before Flu Season
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting your flu shot in September or October, or by Halloween at the latest. This timing offers the best balance; your immunity will be fresh for the height of flu season and you’ll be protected if flu activity starts earlier than usual.
If you miss this window, don’t throw in the towel. It’s still worth getting vaccinated later in the season since flu activity often persists into the spring. Late vaccination can still protect you from circulating strains and reduce your risk of severe illness.
High Risk Groups and the Flu Vaccine
If you fall into a group that is at higher risk for flu complications, be sure to take into account your unique timeline. Babies and children who are getting vaccinated for the first time may need 2 doses, spaced about 4 weeks apart. Starting early ensures they’re fully protected before flu season ramps up.
Adults who are 65 and older may benefit from high-dose or adjuvanted vaccines. Since immunity can wane more quickly in this group, getting vaccinated later in the window may help maintain protection through spring. The flu shot is safe and recommended during pregnancy; timing of the vaccine should take into account protection for both mother and newborn during the peak season.
